Empowering Students to Use Their Voice – Faculty Focus

Quality education must go beyond textbooks and lectures. It should connect students with current events and equip them with skills for real-world engagement. When teaching a theoretical framework, for example, educators should demonstrate to students how that framework applies in real-life scenarios (Jeffrey von Freymann 2025). Similarly, lessons on historical events should include the context and consequences of those moments, linking the past to the present in ways that resonate with students’ lived experiences. Results from the 2023 National Survey of Student Engagement indicate that students benefit from high-impact educational activities, reporting deeper learning and increased retention (NSSE 2023).

In today’s changing academic and political climate, many fields—including education and healthcare—are experiencing the effects of administrative shifts and funding uncertainties. Students are vulnerable to these changes and may feel the weight of decisions made beyond their control (Cynthia Vitters et al. 2024). I have discovered that some of my students are not sufficiently educated or engaged in political matters, resulting in their ignorance of the potential consequences these decisions could have on their future careers. Faculty must consider how these broader changes affect their students and the future of their education and careers. I believe the future of education may be impacted on a scale larger than the sum of our individual experiences.

Fortunately, students bring energy, big ideas, and a passion for change. Throughout history, many transformative movements in the U.S. were student-led—from the Civil Rights Movement to recent climate strikes. Faculty should empower students with knowledge and resources to continue this tradition. Civics education is common in specific higher education fields; however, students pursuing careers in healthcare may not have as much familiarity with the process. Faculty have an opportunity to empower students by equipping them with the tools and confidence to participate in public life. It begins with acknowledging the reality: that the political process can be confusing, overwhelming, and discouraging, especially when students are already stretched thin and inundated with grim news. Disengagement is understandable—but it’s not the only option. Future healthcare professionals have a duty to remain engaged in the political process in order to advocate for our patients and ensure the continued accessibility of healthcare services.

By integrating advocacy into the classroom, educators can normalize civic participation and demonstrate how they can contribute to meaningful change. Faculty should first assess their current attitudes and knowledge and then guide them to apply their energy constructively, participating in our civic processes. One effective method is through structured classroom projects that engage students through real advocacy processes. Educators can use established frameworks to guide this process and offer credible models. Three great models identified for the activity discussed below were from the Centers for Disease Control, the deBeaumont Foundation, the American Public Health Association, and the Association of Public Health Nurses (https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/clearwriting/docs/health-comm-playbook-508.pdf, https://www.phnurse.org/advocacy-toolkit, https://phern.communitycommons.org/advocacy/taking-action-advocacy-for-public-health/getting-started-advocacy/).

In a public health nursing course, I recently applied this method with nursing students over a duration of three weeks. Collaborating in small groups, the students selected a topic of interest, conducted research on the issue, and developed potential interventions. The topics chosen by the students were diverse, including vaccine policies, environmental safety, access to healthy food, Medicare funding, and the conflict in Gaza. The groups researched their topics to identify relevant data, current and proposed policies impacting the issue, and organizations currently involved. At this point, they presented their peers with an outline of their findings to begin testing their messaging on the issue at hand and receive constructive feedback. Next, they developed communication materials to promote their intervention and identified potential community partners with whom to form a coalition to achieve shared goals. Their communication options included letters to the editor, media pitches, and social media campaigns. These were designed to inform the public and build support.

Additionally, each group identified an elected official with the power to affect change and wrote a letter outlining the problem and recommended solutions. For extra credit, the student groups were encouraged to schedule a meeting with them or their staff to present their recommendations. Throughout the process, faculty mentored their progress and encouraged deeper engagement and growth. Students periodically paused to present their work to peer groups, and they used this real-time feedback to refine their advocacy and communication strategies. A structured framework gave them direction and confidence. This process teaches students the importance of communication and teamwork, and provides them with real-world experience in advocacy and civic action. In the future, I plan to include a meeting with legislative staff as a required part of this activity based on feedback from students who elected to do the extra credit. They benefited tremendously and reported increased confidence with the process.

Ultimately, teaching the civic process is not about politics—it’s about empowerment. By showing students how to engage thoughtfully, speak confidently, and act collaboratively, we are not only educating them—we are preparing them to shape the future.

Serving to Lead: The Transformative Role of Servant Leadership in Higher Education – Faculty Focus

Students learn just as much from who we are as educators as they do from what we teach. While content is important, the way faculty members carry themselves, how they communicate, lead, and treat others, can leave an even deeper impact on students’ personal and professional growth. This article explains that educators who use servant leadership principles create trust, empathy, and ethical development in students, ultimately supporting both academic success and long-term character building of students.

Throughout this article, I will explain why servant leadership is especially relevant in higher education today. While using a student-centered philosophy is very beneficial, adopting a servant leadership approach offers an extension of that philosophy. This is not just about teaching content effectively. It is about modeling values like integrity, empathy, and thoughtful decision making in ways students can absorb and carry with them beyond the classroom.
In this paper, I will provide research and real-world examples. I will present practical strategies faculty members where they know their students are walking away a better individual, professionally and personally. I will also discuss how faculty members themselves benefit from adopting a servant leadership model, finding stronger connections with students and a deeper sense of purpose in their work.

Modeling Values in the Classroom

One of the clearest ways servant leadership shows up in higher education is through the modeling of values that students can see and experience in everyday interactions. As Rabin and Smith say, “students learn as much from who we are as what we teach” (p. 2, 2013). This speaks to the purpose of servant leadership in higher education. In the context of the classroom, faculty who embody servant leadership not only communicate course content but also demonstrate values such as compassion and care through their actions.

This leadership approach directly supports student-centered teaching by emphasizing the importance of understanding students’ backgrounds, life circumstances, and unique learning needs. In the research article, Rabin and Smith explain that “to care for students, a teacher needs to know her students well enough to understand their unique motivations and needs” (p. 4). This describes a strong part of servant leadership, placing the needs of others before one’s own and creating relationships built on trust and mutual respect.

When higher education faculty take on the role of servant leaders, they transform learning environments. They challenge the authority-driven classroom stereotype and replace it with a relational one, where students are empowered, respected, and mentored not only academically, but as people. These professors serve as living examples of the kind of leaders we hope our students become.

How Faculty Benefit from Servant Leadership

While much attention is given to how servant leadership benefits students, its impact on faculty is equally as important. Faculty are the heart of teaching and service in higher education, and adopting a servant leadership mindset can enhance the purpose they find in their work.

Stronger relationships and classroom dynamics. Faculty who adopts servant leadership approaches often develop more meaningful relationships with students, which fosters better classroom engagement and cooperation. As Rabin and Smith explain, “teachers who practice an ethic of care consider developing relationships to be artfully complex and at the same time critical to a learning environment” (p. 8, 2013). When professors create spaces where trust and respect are mutual, the classroom becomes a place of safety and comfortability, benefiting both teaching and learning.

Personal fulfillment and emotional connection. The emotional toll of teaching is often overlooked, but faculty who embrace servant leadership experience a deeper sense of purpose in their work. Faculty gain more than content delivery; they gain the joy of watching students thrive and knowing their role made a difference.

Increased satisfaction and retention. Research shows that workplace satisfaction among educators increases when they feel seen and supported. Rabin and Smith talked about that a reflection of heart is critical for both effective teaching and faculty well-being (2013). When institutions encourage servant leadership, they cultivate a better faculty morale, higher job satisfaction, and stronger loyalty to the institution.

Practical Ways Faculty Can Begin Tomorrow

The foundation of servant leadership is intention. Faculty can begin modeling servant leadership in simple ways that foster stronger connections with students, healthier learning environments, and personal fulfillment. Below are three realistic strategies faculty can begin using tomorrow:

1. Practice Intentional Listening

Great teachers listen more than they talk, creating space for students to feel seen and heard. In the classroom, this might look like pausing before responding to student comments, asking follow-up questions that show curiosity, or creating reflection activities that allow the quieter voices to contribute. Being fully present communicates respect and care. Students are more likely to engage, ask questions, and trust the instructor when they feel heard. Faculty often gain feedback into student needs, boosting classroom culture and reducing conflict.

2. Respond with Empathy and Flexibility

Rather than assuming conflict or disrespect, servant leaders seek to understand the reasoning behind student behavior. For example, if a student misses a deadline, a professor might ask about circumstances before being close minded. This also could be seen as staying real with your students, making sure they know you make mistakes as well. Implementing this will make students feel respected and supported. Faculty reduce unnecessary conflict and model emotional intelligence, an essential skill for students to learn.

3. Empower Students with Real Responsibilities

Servant leadership isn’t about doing everything for others, it’s about helping others grow. Faculty can give students meaningful tasks like leading part of a class discussion, mentoring peers, or giving feedback about the course. Offering students that autonomy in the course will result in better trust and relationships. Students will build confidence and ownership over their learning.

Servant leadership in higher education is more than a philosophy, it’s a daily practice that transforms both student outcomes and faculty experiences. When educators lead with care, humility, and a commitment to student growth, they foster an environment where students thrive academically, emotionally, and ethically. By integrating servant leadership principles such as intentional listening, empathetic responses, and student empowerment, professors can cultivate vibrant, respectful, and collaborative learning environments. In doing so, they don’t just teach content, they develop whole people.

Assume the Best: Trust-Based Strategies for Empowering College Students – Faculty Focus
Creating a trust-based classroom begins with an essential mindset: students are doing their best. When we approach teaching from this perspective, we move away from punitive measures, fear-based management, and skepticism about students’ honesty. Instead, we foster an environment of learning, growth, and empowerment. Trusting students does not mean ignoring accountability; it means designing courses, policies, and practices that build their confidence and skills while treating them as equal partners in their education.

Course Design: Scaffold, Support, and Empower

A well-designed course sets the stage for trust by providing clarity, flexibility, and opportunities for growth.
- Transparent policies: Clearly outline expectations while building flexibility. For instance, rigid attendance or late-work penalties can be replaced with policies such as “grace days,” where students can submit work late without penalty. Such policies demonstrate compassion and respect for the complexities of students’ lives (Nilson, 2016; Hammond, 2015).
- Scaffolded assignments: Break significant projects into smaller, more manageable parts, such as proposals, annotated bibliographies, and rough drafts, to reduce student anxiety and provide opportunities for meaningful feedback at each step, improving learning outcomes (Ambrose, 2010).
- Collaborative syllabus design: During the first class, engage students in setting community and classroom norms and goals. A co-created syllabus session fosters accountability and trust, as students feel ownership of the course structure (Cook-Sather et al., 2014).
Teaching example: In one of my recent courses, I included a “workshop day” for students to peer review each other’s drafts of case conceptualizations. This scaffolding helped students approach final projects with more confidence, and peer feedback enriched their understanding of the assignment and deepened engagement with the course materials.

Active Learning: From Fear to Engagement

Fear of failure can stifle creativity and learning. Active learning strategies help students take risks and engage deeply with material in a low-pressure environment.
- Low-stakes practice: Use frequent formative assessments such as polls, quizzes, games, or writing and discussion prompts to reinforce and retrieve essential concepts. These activities encourage participation without the anxiety of high-stakes grading (Freeman et al., 2014; Agarwal, 2019).
- Normalize mistakes to promote growth: Frame errors as essential steps in the learning process. For example, during group problem-solving, ask students to identify and reflect on common mistakes, transforming failure into an opportunity for growth (Dweck, 2006).
What to avoid: Grading active learning activities as if they were summative assessments is inappropriate. Students should feel safe to experiment without fear of punishment or penalty.

Class Participation: Meeting Students Where They Are

Participation policies can often feel punitive, especially for students who struggle with anxiety, barriers to verbal and social engagement, and students with accommodations due to neurodiversity. Trust-based strategies offer multiple pathways for meaningful contribution and connection.
- Flexible participation options: Allow students to choose how they engage, including online discussion boards, written reflections, video reflections, or in-class individual or group work. Recognizing diverse participation and communication styles builds inclusivity and reduces the pressure to perform in a single, narrow way (Gay, 2018; Dweck, 2006).
- Student-led discussions: Rotate leadership roles for class discussions, allowing students to take ownership of their learning with their peers. Provide guidance and resources to ensure they feel confident in this role.
Teaching example: One student-led discussion in my class led to unexpected insights when a quieter student shared their expertise on a niche topic that another student was interested in. This reinforced how trust in students can bring out hidden strengths and foster the courage to share in a positive classroom climate.

Grading and Feedback: Support and Guide, Don’t Punish and Penalize

Grading practices should reflect the belief that students can grow and improve. Penalizing mistakes undermines trust and discourages effort. Instead, focus on feedback that builds skills, enriches learning, and deepens understanding.
- Revise and resubmit: Allow students to revise and resubmit work for a higher grade and additional feedback. This approach emphasizes learning over performance, encourages students to take risks in their initial attempts, and reduces fear and anxiety over grades.
- Rubrics as roadmaps: Use detailed and intentional rubrics, not just to grade but as tools to teach students what quality work looks like and what to aspire to in their work. Share rubrics in advance, collaborate with students to create or adjust rubrics, and encourage students to self-assess before submitting assignments (Brookhart, 2013).
- Feedback as an opportunity for dialogue: Invite students to meet to discuss feedback and revisions. These conversations deepen their understanding and demonstrate your investment in their success.
Teaching with Technology: Empower and Encourage, Don’t Police and Instill Fear

Technology tools like plagiarism detectors and AI checkers can erode trust if used as punitive measures. Instead, these tools should guide and empower students. Hutson (2024) identifies the challenges of AI in education as the blurred boundaries between human and AI-generated content, the inadequacy of traditional plagiarism definitions, and the need to balance the ethical integration of AI with the preservation of critical thinking, originality, and intellectual property standards.

Educators should teach students about proper citation practices and academic integrity while allowing space for mistakes as part of the learning process. Replace accusatory language in syllabi with language that supports student learning. For instance, providing workshops on academic writing and citation or encouraging dialogue about the ethical use of AI tools fosters a supportive learning environment rather than punitive. Hutson (2024) emphasizes the importance of adapting pedagogical approaches and institutional policies to address the evolving challenges of plagiarism in the era of generative AI while upholding the core values of academic integrity and honesty.

A 2023 study highlights the ethical and practical challenges associated with AI detectors, such as inaccuracies in identifying student-generated content and the unintended reinforcement of a guilty until proven innocent narrative (Ifelebuegu et al., 2023). Such practices can lead to mistrust between students and faculty, harming the educational relationship. Additionally, reliance on these tools may discourage students from taking risks in their learning for fear of being wrongly accused of dishonesty (Ifelebuegu et al., 2023). 

Assuming the best about students transforms the classroom from a place of fear and performance to one of trust and growth. By designing courses that scaffold learning, encouraging participation in diverse ways, and using grading and feedback as tools for improvement rather than punishment, faculty create environments where students feel empowered to take risks and grow. Trust is not a passive belief—it’s an active choice to see students as capable, honest, and deserving of our support. What changes will you make to assume the best about your students?
